American Locations 4 – I-90 Through South Dakota

We took this trip to Yellowstone and surrounding areas in the summer of 2019.

The next morning we continued west through South Dakota on I-90. There were a lot of billboards along the way. Here is an example.

We crossed the Missouri River at Aocoma and stopped at a tourist attraction that had been well-advertised on billboards we passed – Al’s Oasis.

It was a good place to stretch our legs. We roamed through some shops.

And saw our first, but far from last, bison of the trip.

That is I-90 behind it, and the Missouri River beyond that. When we continued west on the Interstate we traversed gently rolling hills. We stopped at a rest area later that day.

To the north was a lot of open ranchland.

While to the south we could see the edge of the Badlands.

Which was well-decorated with billboards.

Since we were planning on seeing the Badlands on the way back, we drove on by. We passed by Wall. There were more billboards advertising Wall Drug than any other attraction, but we passed that by, too. We had already wasted time at Al’s Oasis. But a brewery located in Rapid City, which was our destination for the day, instead of putting up billboards had strewn old fire engines along the side of the Interstate. They were at least interesting to look at, something different from all the billboards. Also that day when we stopped for gas we were swarmed by motorcycles, nearly a hundred of them at one gas station. The Sturgis Rally was coming up. We quit for the day at Rapid City. The city was jammed with motorcycles, but we still found a reasonable private campground for the night. As you can see, it was crowded. The Sturgis Rally is a big deal.

After resting up, I walked over to an attraction next to the campground.

I didn’t go in for the show. I was mainly just wanting to stretch my legs after driving all day. Besides, there was plenty to look at outside.

Next Location – southern range of the Bighorn Mountains, South Dakota
