American Locations 5 – southern range of the Bighorn Mountains, South Dakota

We took this trip to Yellowstone and surrounding areas in the summer of 2019.

The next morning we continued west on I-90. As we drove by Sturgis we passed hundreds of motorcyclists encamped in open fields. We stopped at the visitor center on the Wyoming state line.

There were a couple interesting exhibits there.

Also, a piece of petrified tree.

We exited at Buffalo, where we pulled into a gas station to eat lunch. It would be a long time before we got back onto an Interstate. After, we headed south on Hwy 16, embarking on a very scenic drive.

That took us into the southern range of the Bighorn Mountains.

At Powder Pass, the highest elevation along Hwy. 16 (9,666 ft.), we stopped and took in the sights.

This path was enticing, but I didn’t get to hike it.

We drove on after that through more beautiful scenery.

Next Location – BLM campground in the Bighorn Mountains
